We’ve already covered Rule One: Separate Family Members. If you missed that one, you’ll have no idea what I’m talking about when I mention a particular plant family. So go back now. Learning this stuff for each and every species will make your ears bleed. Seriously.

In this part we cover Rule Two: Separate Hatfields and McCoys.

Some plant families just hate each other. It goes way back and they each have a different story for how it all got started, but the point is–put ’em together and it’s war.

Here’s a quick and dirty on your six major garden feuds:

1. Tomato Nightshades VS Potato Nightshades: Tomatoes and Peppers HATE potatoes and eggplant.

2. Bean Family VS Lilies and Tomato Nightshades: No peas with peppers and tomatoes. No peanuts with the onions or garlic.

3. Cabbage Family VS Nightshades and Roses: No broccoli with strawberries or the potatoes.

4. Carrot Family VS Potato Nightshades: No dill with the eggplant

5. Corn VS Tomato Nightshades: Corn hates tomatoes and peppers

6. Gourd Family VS Mint and Nightshades: No seating squash with your peppers and basil, K?

Today, walk around your garden (or look at the plan in your notebook) and notice what Hatfields and McCoys you may have snuggled up in your beds.
Just notice.
