Big Raccoon in the Suburbs

by Tomato Lady on August 27, 2008

This pic was taken just after midnight last night. We have to guard the cats while they eat otherwise they let procyon lotor here have all their food. Virtually unafraid of us, he or she must be shooed off repeatedly and insistently until the cats finish their meals.

According to Wikipedia, a raccoon’s diet consists of 40% invertebrates, 33% plant foods, and 27% vertebrates. Cat food is known to give them gout, so I do not feel terribly inhospitable insisting he or she abstain from the chow.

Still, I am aware we are the invaders here even though this community was settled almost two hundred years ago.

What a face.
