Ahhh! I followed the links you gave and also did an image search on the Mormon Cricket. It is very similar indeed. The fact that swarmers are the colorful ones coincides with a wayward green one finding its way to my garden.
Thank you so much for the research you did and the great links. I appreciate it very much.
Glad you found our site! Thanks for your informative visit and come back soon.
I checked out your blog, too, http://lifessweetpassions.blogspot.com, and found many interesting items--would you believe my co-blogger Ivory couldn't find Fels Naptha at her store and so I ended up giving her some of mine?! Funny coincidence!

Hello! I actually just found your site today, which is a great thing, because you have the answers (or tutorials) to almost every question I've ever had about gardening and the like!

Anyhow, I know I'm quite late for this, but I just wanted to give you an alternate answer to your question. The insect does look like a very big grasshopper, but judging by the size, it could also be a Mormon Cricket (which come in all different colors). We get them over here in Utah and Idaho a lot.

Here's some links to some information about Mormon Crickets:

Wikipedia:
http://tinyurl.com/38j57c

More Information: http://tinyurl.com/5lzmb4

How the Mormon Cricket got it's name:
http://tinyurl.com/6nswbd

I could be completely wrong, but I hope this helps, nevertheless!

Maybe we are all in the wrong business. Grasshoppers are a delicacy in some cultures...

I think your guy is related to the 1 million have here at my place. They are so huge, even the cats won't mess with them.

mymaracas--Thank you very much! Glad you found us.
I'm sure you're right about the grasshopper--but WHAT a grasshopper! I'm not used to such proportions. I guess I am half-hoping, half-fearing it is some out-of-the-ordinary variety.
Do try the lily paper. It is very rewarding. A majority cotton or abaca paper with flecks of lily would be beautiful, too, I think.

Hello there. I found my way in here from your comment at Robins Woods, and I have to say your blog is wonderful.

The egg post made laugh out loud. And I read with great interest the post about making paper out of daylilly leaves. I always wanted to try making paper, and I do have a lot of daylilly leaves, so I just may give that a go.

Oh... and isn't that bug a really big grasshopper?
