Mums only bloom for about four to six weeks. So, mine look like THIS:

But, if properly cared for, this little guy will bloom for me in the Spring AND the Fall. Mums are perennials, despite the fact that they quickly encounter the landfill after a brief Fall stint in front of the bank or car dealership.
1. Cut him down to the ground. (Actually I didn’t make it all the way to the dirt. I started hitting really green wood and baby leaves about an inch above ground. So, cut him down to a NUB, maybe.)
2. Pull any weeds. Add some dirt if the ‘pot shape’ is showing above ground.
3. Cover with ‘mulch’. You can buy it…or you can just save a newspaper or snatch some leaves and pine needles from you MIL’s lawn.
See? No more ugly, and a nice treat in the spring!
