Goats in the paper

  • A while back, the paper did an article of Ivory here.
  • Their follow-up article and video regarding her goats is here.

Ivory loves her Commercial Appeal friends because they are always respectful and generous and supportive of her crazy hobbies.

Legal Update
I have been informed that my summons from Animal Control will not be prosecuted until I have had sufficient time to complete the Planning Department’s permit process. (YAY!!)

I was still working within that structure when Animal Control made their move and I will now be allowed to complete it. (YAY!!)

I had freaked out at one point and tried to get Planning to reconsider the permit process (when I was told that the all those siggies I was getting only got me a spot on the agenda and that I was going to have to ‘defend’ my desire for a goat and ‘convince’ the board and that Animal Control would be there and be part of the decision, ACK!), but I never stopped acquiring signatures, so I’m finishing up, hopefully today. Now my job is to not anger the people who are inclined to grant me permission.

***So, to the very kind members of Channel 5 that took such interest in my pets, I’m afraid the crisis part of this story has passed and may no longer be news-worthy. But, I won’t downplay for a second the fact that your presence in town on Thursday must have significantly contributed to the speedy resolution of my predicament. I’m sorry that your work didn’t end up benefiting you very much, but it has made a world of difference for my family. Thank you.***

What About Everyone Who Comes After Me?
More important than my personal goat saga is this: I have heard that there is a ordinance amendment coming and I hope it will make that permit process they designed for me permanent, rather than outlawing the idea altogether.

Some of you have offered to write letters on my behalf. THANK YOU! I have an idea that I’d like to toss around with you. In light of current circumstances, I think my Town could use encouragement to make what they’re doing for me available to everyone, permanently.

I think it would help people like us to praise my Town for inventing this permit process, which if made permanently available to all residents, puts them on the cutting edge of sustainability.

What are your thoughts?

Ivory

Hi, Ivory. So glad you’re going to be able to keep your babies unmolested. Congratulations! I’m surprised there are no other comments about this.
Your suggestion to praise your town publicly is a good one. I plan to investigate whether my town also allows cuties like yours on premises within the town limits. I’m happy to say they recently expanded the rules to allow bees and chickens on smaller parcels, so maybe they also wouldn’t be averse to pygmy goats.
BTW, can you really get enough milk from your two little goats to make it worth the effort? If so, do you plan to make cheese (YUM!)?
