Blueberries v. Roses
I know you can eat rose petals but as I have yet to find a way to make them a significant part of my family’s diet they are being supplanted by four eminently edible blueberry bushes. Three rose bushes will be moved from their prime location in the sun to a partly shaded location where they will probably languish. Sad, but it must be done.
I have four large blueberry bushes now and they are such a pleasure I can’t imagine regretting the substitution. I only really regret not having done this sooner so I would have eight mature blueberry bushes like, NOW.
Have you been yanking out your ornamentals? What about some front yard gardening? I’d love to hear if you are making the move to edibles. Do you sneak tomato plants in among the landscaping? Herbs in the foundation planting? Any difficult sacrifices? Are your neighbors looking at you funny? How does your (edible) garden grow?
P.S. If you have pictures of your gardens you’d like to share, click on our flickr page in the sidebar and join up. We would love to see them!

TL, did you consider putting the roses in containers? That way you could still keep them in a sunny spot. I think they would do fine, if they haven’t already succumbed…
Hi Portia! The roses are doing okayish. They gripe a little about losing their 360 degree exposure, but they benefited from plenty of rain this Spring. I regret to say I am a terrible container gardener, but there is no excuse for that other than rank laziness–I forget they are there and let them go thirsty. I will repent and consider containers more seriously under similar circumstances.
Hello Portia, remember me. I’m living as a small farming and ranch home in Arp Tx, retired AF, and retired Associate Professor from Bossier Parish Community College. If this gets through to you and you’d like to catch up with one another, you can reach me at retiredrooster@hotmail.com. Ray
