Slugfest 2009

by Tomato Lady on May 23, 2009

I feel so . . . slimy.

But it had to be done.

Go to work on one of my very first ripe strawberries and I’m gonna open up a can of . . . as it turned out, Natural Light Smooth Pilsner, on ya.

Ew, here’s the crime scene:

What are slugs, anyway? Homeless snails? Snails with shells parked somewhere else? I had to look it up. Not surprisingly, they are gastropod mollusks, like snails, but without visible shells. Fascinating, huh? OK, perhaps mildly interesting.

The beer lured a bunch of snails to their deaths–they are attracted to fermentation. Sugar water plus yeast mixtures work, too. (Ivory didn’t catch any slugs with her beer, though. Even slugs hate it.) This article has more great, natural tips for slug control I will have to try.

In the meantime, have a cold one on me, slugs.
