This is my back yard fence. Beyond you see ACRES of open unused ‘common area’. What are the odds that the neighbors could get allotments and farm that bad boy? I could even use my own hose…but, I dunno. I’m a weirdie.
ALSO, the neighborhood association had trouble paying for the recent storm damage, and I think they could benefit from a little ‘rent’ from weirdies like me.
Who knows? Green stuff is getting pretty mainstream around here. We even just got a farmers’ market on Thursdays.

How amazing would THAT be? I giant community garden! People could plant and grow and take what they need…share with those who can’t afford their own…looks like a perfect spot! I’ve been toying with the idea of a community garden here in my area…but the perfect spot hasn’t presented itself…YET.
Suburban folk can be very particular about keeping their common areas in a “hands off!” mode. But try a NO!!/um, okay approach. At the next association meeting suggest something sure to scare their socks off, then slide in the idea of turning the space into a community garden as a more palatable option.
Ivory: We are all so blessed with wide open spaces here, I propose we bus in a group of homeless people from the city each week and allow them to make gardens in our commons.
Association: NO!!!
Ivory: Okay, how about we turn the space into a community garden? (Be prepared with all the glorious pictures of how community gardens bring people together in positive ways and highlight the association’s opportunity to raise funds from the garden and increased produce sales at the farmers’ market.)
Association: Okay, that’s a much better idea. Approved!
I think you have a wonderful idea! maybe you could ask around if people are interested and get the idea rolling to build interest and it would be all planned and set to go for next summer. Maybe if you got the idea fleshed out a little–like size of allotments and some general guidelines for people to agree to on how they manage the garden plots so that people can get along and then plan a neighborhood meeting to get other people’s ideas and come up with the consensus and be set to go next spring. Contact your county cooperative extension office for some help with this. They have urban horticulturists who can help you with classes, handouts, Master Gardeners who can advise you, and lots of good stuff on their websites that you’ll find very supportive.

Near my old house, there was a family that rented 20′ x 20′ plots in the field next to their house. It was really cool, and only $20 for the summer. Of course, my garden never grew anything but weeds, but in my own defense, I was hugely pregnant that summer (with an 18 month old at home) and should have known better than to think I could be productive enough to garden… LOL Anyway, my point was, your not such a weirdie afterall! (How’s that for a moral to my story?)

Wouldn’t it be awesome if you could make that work? Community gardens can be so good for so many people. Experts can have more space to play and novices can get their toes wet.
