Quash the Squash campaign image

Little House loves chickens, even chickens across the pond.

We were contacted by Stephan at the RSPCA and asked to let our UK readers know about their campaign to stop further crowding of commercial chicken sheds.

“The UK government is considering new EU legislation that may increase the number of chickens allowed in rearing sheds. At current minimum standards, each bird is given less space than a sheet of paper. It’s hard to walk or even flap their wings. But this legislation would allow yet more birds to be squashed in, cutting that space by almost a quarter. UK readers can make a difference by urging Jim Fitzpatrick, Minister for Animal Welfare, to make the right choice for UK chickens and quash the squash, by sending an email via the RSPCA campaign website.”

That’s it.  Send an email.  When I’ve tried to sign petitions and whatnot, there’s usually a bunch of personal info and crap to fill out and I give up before I finish.  Not these folks.  Just a name and post code to prove you’re in the UK and you’re on your way.  They even have a template letter for you to doctor as you see fit.

Two little clicks for the UK chicks!

Hi, I’m here on behalf of the RSPCA to say thanks for covering this story last year – we have some new good news to share – helped by coverage like yours – about chicken welfare in the UK. I couldn’t find your email address on your blog, but if you email me I can send more info and images in case you’d like to write about the story.

Thanks,

Beth
