One of These Eggs is Not Like the Others

When I was selecting chicks, Easter Eggers weren’t high on my list in the beginning.  I didn’t really think colored eggs were that big of a deal.  What sold me were stories of their good personalities.

Now, however, I have to say finding the first blue-green beauty in the straw was at least as exciting as finding the very first (brown) egg.  I tell myself I got EE’s for the kids, but who’s the one out there every day like it’s Easter morning?

Uh huh.

The EE’s themselves seem to be at the bottom of the pecking order compared to the Orps and the ‘Lorps, but they are sweet little things, and interesting-looking birds, too. Hawkish.

So far, good all-around gals.

And of course, this:

Hi! We had chicken when I was growing up and we had all kinds of colors, brown, green, blue, pale pink. It was interesting going to pick up the eggs and see what would be in there :) Your picture reminds me of that!

I also have Americaunas, black austrolorps and golden Buffs. Comets are new and wonderful birds. I get shades of brown, blue, green , pink and white eggs, although now I mostly get expensive manure. Lots of it.

We have Easter Egg layers in addition to our brown egg layers. I must say that it is pretty cool to offer kids Green Eggs (ala Dr. Seuss) for breakfast.

This is my first YWC (year with chickens) 4 easter eggers, 2 silver laced Wyandotte, 2 Plymouth Barred Rock, and 2 Rhode Island Reds. Plus a beautiful SLW roo, and 1 (surviving) silkie (roo). I’m getting 6-7 eggs a day right now. I still feel like that one or two blue eggs I get every day are too cool ….. And they are in fact, on average, slightly larger than the browns I get.

My MIL has 10 chickens, and I think 3 of them are EEs. They are such sweet birds!

Oh lucky you! It has been a long time since I lived on a farm and had all kinds of animals and gardens. I do miss it but love seeing your pics and posts about your fun. Having grown up on a farm then marrying and having my own little farm I used the Organic Gardening magazine as my guide when it came out. Idon’t know if you can still get it or not but it was a valuable asset to my married farm days. I am so thankful to be able to relive the memories through you ladies as being disabled no longer allows me to do so physically. Best Wishes!

Alice–I’m very glad you are enjoying the pics. Growing up on a farm I bet your garden was wonderful. I have seen OG magazine. It’s a good resource. Best wishes to you and yours!
