It’s been a practically perfect spring for gardening. Plenty of rain, but not too much rain except for about a week there when we wondered if we should start looking for a source for gopher wood.

Everything is blooming or fruiting, so I took some pictures of the garden with the glow of spring upon it.

The hydrangeas are looking particularly gorgeous. I went years with no luck in the hydrangea department, and finally think I’ve figured them out. Sun, but some shade, and plenty of water and good soil.

The chickens have been laying well. They were laying AWESOME around Easter, but have tapered off a bit and now give us about 4-5 eggs a day.

We picked the first ripe tomato of the season. It’s a yellow cherry tom and it was sweet and just the right tart.

Still battling carrot-thieving voles.

The blackberries are beginning to ripen. These are Kiowa variety, HUGE, but a bit on the sour side unless they’re dead ripe. Large seeds.

Pollinators are in full swing.

The sweet potatoes are looking good. I planted half purple and half Diane varieties. The purple are supposed to be especially nutritious and the Diane extra tasty.

I found chanterelle mushrooms in the yard! I can’t believe it. There aren’t many, so I probably won’t be eating them until they are more plentiful.

I hope your spring has been as lovely as ours. If not, and I’m afraid there’s a lot of you, I hope it gets better soon.
