It depends on the personality.
There are those that say if a writer doesn’t spend at least a few minutes EVERY DAY putting words on a page, they won’t ever make anything worthwhile.
I haven’t found this to be true. I know several successful authors who do not follow this rule. And, I’m not a do-it-every-day kind of gal….about anything.
I work best on a weekly rotation. If I don’t touch it for a week, I’m in BIG trouble. But, if I don’t touch it for a day? Meh.
Two to three times a week working on something that I feel is heading somewhere and I’m happy. I won’t get much more than that anyway. Three kids under six? Nuff said.
The trick is finding the right rotation and sticking to it. Look around and see how often you have to ‘touch base’ with things in your life to feel really connected to them and start with that.
As long as I feel connected, I know that my subconscious is working on my writing. Things will pop into mind throughout the day, cause somewhere in my head I’m always writing.
But, if I don’t touch a keyboard for four days…it will take weeks or months to get back into the swing.

I am loving these writing posts. I’ve got something brewing in my mind…have for a while now. It’s way in the back still…but every once in a while I get a little snippet…write it down in my special notebook…then add it to the Publisher document I created specifically for that project. I’ve never written before…but have always wanted to. I appreciate these posts a lot…very helpful. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you for saying this, Deanna. I do something ‘writing related’ every day. Whether that means doing a critique, speaking at a school, reading, or even answering an email about books, I count it.
I worked on a current project 4 days in a row and then needed a break. Not going to beat myself up over it.
Hi there,
First of All I need to say I love Your Blog! So much interesting and usefull things. I am loving it! Keep up the good work.
And regarding how often should a person write. Well, we have to listen to out inner self, to that little person inside, creativity, inspiration…. Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night and can not fall back to sleep until I get something done that is occupying my mind….
Ok, Cya! Have fun!
