I’ve called a temporary halt to my garden shape-up due to inclement weather. We’ve had over 10 inches of rain over the last few days and it’s raining right now.
I’m eyeing one of the garden eyesores with new respect:
I’m joking, sort of, but there have been some water rescues not far from here.
Aaaand–my basement flooded. Twice. Including as I write this.
Quelle joie.
So here are some soggy garden scenes.
I’ll look back on them soon and wonder where all this water went. I’ll probably be spritzing the carrot bed with a hose as soon as next week.
Soggy daffodils.
Soggy chickens.
And muddy boots.
Speaking of carrots, I read somewhere recently, can’t remember where, of a tip to get them started. It said put a board over the seeded bed. When the seeds germinate, remove the board, but don’t take it away. Prop it up on a couple of bricks so it shades the bed closely, until the seedlings get started. Carrots can take a long time to germinate, so be patient.
I suppose this rain is good for the carrots, since they’re in a raised bed and haven’t flooded, but I’m ready for a break in the clouds.
Thanks for the carrot tip! I just planted some seeds and will find a board from my junk pile. I tried growing some last fall but the squirrels were a little crazy and destroyed them.
Oh my goodness, I’m sorry about your basement! We’ve had a week of rain here in Austin, and I was so glad we got our Yard Day in before that, but I am wondering whether the seeds in the raised beds got displaced. And I discovered too late that a friend who was helping planted the carrot seeds way too deep! But that’s all right… I wanted everyone to get a chance to get in on the gardening action, so we’ll all see how it goes. I’m still so grateful for the help 🙂
Hope things dry out soon… We’ve still got tons of showing up to do right along with you!
Daisy, Too bad you don’t have an underground cistern to harvest all that water and save for the dry days! My dream property would include an underground cistern, a geothermal system to heat and cool the house, a liner free pond, and happy, uncomplaining family members who loving help me tend the abundant vegetable beds I construct in my imagination. Like I said, that’s the property of my dreams. What I get is Squirrel Manor, where not even my cedar shed is immune from the squirrel destruction, and the uncomplaining family members and abundant vegetable beds are fictional. Sigh. LOL.
Bonnie–Ack! Now I want a cistern. And have you seen quaquaponics? Too many cool things for that dream setup.
Elizabeth Vega–Thanks! Basement is more or less dry now. It was very nice of you to let beginners help with your planting. You may have given someone else the gardening bug–and maybe the carrots will be okay??
Bonnie…we get squirrels in our attic, they eat through our siding. To keep them out we heard from a exterminator to toss mothballs in our attic. So far so good. They stay out of the attic but still eat through the siding and no amount of “pest spray” works plus it washes off after it rains.
And BTW, I wanna live at your dream property. Didn’t even think of a cistern. So cool.
Hi Mattie,
I think squirrels in the attack are better than bats in the belfry…lol. Squirrels! They’re there to keep us on our toes.
