I have it on good authority that this is actual, real squash:
It ‘s a White Lebanese. Maybe the wedding tent is working. Time will tell. I’m hand-pollinating any female blossoms I see and I haven’t witnessed any squash pest attacks so far. Of course, that may not mean anything. Sneaky cusses.
This is a cucumber called Shantung Suhyo Cross, a long, thin, Japanese variety:
Here’s the biggest tomato so far. It’s called Marglobe. Not this particular tomato, the whole plant. Although it’s tempting to give them all names. We could call this one Eve, because she was the first. Eve is going to be delicious.
Are you growing anything new and exciting in your garden this year?
Edited to add: Found a squash bug INSIDE the tent. We are under attack! We are under attack!
I am growing Kohl rabi, celeriac and some bean that i don’t know the name of as they were given to my firend…maybe I should think of a name for this bean!!! Also newbies for me this year are…turnip, swede and spinach…I am very excited to see how these things come along…oh and aubergine and pumpkin and melon too….wow I have a lot of newbies this year…i will be pleased if only half of them succeed…good luck with yours!!
I’m growing Leeks. Ever since I had Leek and Artichoke Lasagna, I’ve been dreaming of my own Leeks.
The kids are doing Sweet peas, beans, and a cabbage.
Keeping fingers crossed
Bright lights swiss chard, rainbow carrots and thistles… oh wait, I grew thistles last year!
Glad the wedding tent is working so far! (The heck with the neighbors!) Have you added the strings of lights?
Wow! I don’t have anything producing yet.I’ve got a lot of newbies this year.I’ll tell you first that I’ve only ever grown cherry tomatoes. The newbies are big boy tomatoes, green bell peppers, cucumbers, squash, zucchini, onions, broccoli and carrots.I don’t know how it will go.But even if it’s bad I only spent about $20 🙂
New this year are parsnips and soybeans! Yup, growing (one) soybean plant, of a variety called “Envy” which is suposed to be nice and compact with great pods for edamame.
I always throw in a new veggie each year. This year I planted an eggplant. Her flowers are beautiful! Everything else in the garden is already producing (bell peppers, tomatoes, zukes, radishes, peas, and beans) The cantaloupes are blossoming, but haven’t seen any fruit yet. As for the squash bug things…I pick them off when watering and toss them over the fence for the birds. If you see a bunch of tiny eggs on the squash leaves just scrape them off and dispose of them. (Necessary carnage!) (Justifiable bugicide!)
This year is a big step for me, the newest being okra. I’ve got cherry tomatoes, big tomatoes, zucchini, beans, bell peppers, banana peppers, eggplant, cantalope, and lots of herbs.
Also new is a lemon tree. It’s about 5″ high. lol. I might get lemons in the next decade! My cousin had a mature lemon tree producing fruit, and at the grocery store he said ‘I’m not paying .50 for a lemon!’. I can’t wait for that!
hey Little Houz – thanks for being one of my main inspirations to start growing things this year! my husband and I planted tomatos, potatoes, sunflowers, basil and cilantro. the cilantro seems to be too delicate for me and our South Carolinan hard rains lately, though.
I’ve also dubbed our side yard as a ‘Home for Wayward Tomato Plants’ because as my friends tend THEIR gardens they’ve been throwing out 4 to 5 tomato plants here, 2-3 pepper plants there….and I just can’t let that happen.
I think now we have roughly 25-30 tiny, mid-sized, and struggling tomato plants………..
I need a support group.
Corinne–So glad to be an inspiration! I understand about the tomatoes. I’ve got volunteers in every corner of the garden and I can’t kill them.
This is my last time trying squash. I have massive squash plants…but the tiny little squash seem to just wither up and die off the plant. Have been watching them carefully for insects or worms and have not seen any yet. If I don’t get squash this year, I will just have to purchase from the farmer’s market. So far, my tomato plants are wonderful, loaded with blooms and small green tomatoes. Can’t wait to get my first ripe ones! Next year I will have to think of something else to try in place of squash if I am not successful this year. Is egg plant easy to grow?
jan–Same here. At least the tomatoes are doing well. I’m growing eggplant for the first time this year and will be able to report soon. Their culture is similar to tomatoes. They’re looking good so far.
I grew pototoes for the first time. I used the trash bag method. I had very low expectations. I mean really, stick a few shriveled up old taters in a bag of dirt?? It can’t be that easy right? Well let me tell you, I just dumped out the bag this evening and WOW I had about 2 dozen large and 1 dozen small potatoes!!! I wasn’t even really trying! I started with 3 small red pototoes I found sadly forgotten in the bottom of my tater bin. And as a bonus I now have a bunch of new compost to use elswhere!
My success with the pototoes will have to lessen the blow of my completly destroyed squash plants. Those squash bugs are ruthless! I fought the good fight, but they won. Every year I say, “I am NOT planting squash next year!”. And every spring my hope is renewed. So, I plant them. They grow big and strong, with beautiful blossoms. I fuss over them and feel so proud. Then reality hits. So sad. I just laid the carcasses of all 6 plants in the compost pile. So very sad. But hey, I have Potatoes!!
